Background of the Study
Determining age at death is a pivotal component of forensic anthropology, particularly when dealing with unidentified skeletal remains. In Orlu Local Government Area, Imo State, accurate age estimation not only aids in victim identification but also provides crucial data for reconstructing demographic profiles in forensic cases. Recent research underscores the utility of dental eruption, epiphyseal fusion, and cranial suture closure as reliable indicators for age determination (Ugo, 2023). However, variability in skeletal preservation and methodological inconsistencies pose challenges to forensic accuracy (Ibe, 2024). This study investigates the application of standard age estimation techniques in local contexts while considering environmental, nutritional, and genetic factors that may influence skeletal maturation. Emphasis is placed on refining protocols through the integration of advanced imaging and statistical models to enhance predictive accuracy. The research also explores the implications of age estimation for both individual identification and broader forensic investigations, thereby contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of postmortem analysis (Ekwueme, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
In Orlu, forensic anthropologists encounter significant challenges in accurately determining the age at death from unknown skeletal remains due to inconsistent preservation and methodological variability. These issues often lead to broad age estimates, undermining the precision needed for reliable identification (Chukwu, 2023). The absence of localized standards further complicates the application of global age estimation methods. This study seeks to evaluate these challenges and improve the reliability of age determination protocols in the region (Nwachukwu, 2024).

Objectives of the Study:

  1. To evaluate current age estimation techniques used in forensic anthropology.

  2. To assess the influence of local environmental and genetic factors on skeletal aging.

  3. To develop refined protocols for more accurate age determination.

Research Questions:

  1. What methods are currently employed for age estimation in skeletal remains?

  2. How do local factors influence the accuracy of these methods?

  3. What improvements can be made to enhance age determination precision?

Research Hypotheses:

  1. H₁: The integration of advanced imaging significantly refines age estimates.

  2. H₂: Local environmental factors cause measurable deviations in skeletal aging.

  3. H₃: Standardized protocols improve the accuracy of age determination.

Significance of the Study
This study is crucial for enhancing forensic investigations by improving age estimation methods for unidentified remains. The refined protocols will bolster identification processes, contributing to more effective legal resolutions and providing valuable demographic insights for forensic research (Okafor, 2023).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
The study is limited to forensic anthropology practices focused on determining age at death in unknown skeletal remains in Orlu Local Government Area, examining only methodological and local environmental influences.

Definitions of Terms:

  1. Age Estimation: The process of approximating the age at death using skeletal indicators.

  2. Epiphyseal Fusion: The process of bone growth plate closure, used as an age marker.

  3. Cranial Suture Closure: The fusion of skull sutures, indicative of age progression.
